Art School at Kapalua |
| Kapalua
Resort on Maui's northwest coast has, from the beginning, embraced the
arts in their many forms and expressions. The Art School at Kapalua, which
opened in November 1995, is the latest in the innovative approaches the
resort has applied to the arts. Housed in a historic plantation building, the school has become the center for art education for the West Maui community. To Maui residents, the school offers ongoing classes in various media of visual and performing arts including drawing, ballet, ceramics and painting, as well as a Summer Enrichment Program for children from June through August. Visitors to the island are also encourage to join classes on a drop-in basis. Among its facilities, The Art School offers two large kilns; a dance studio; ceramic studio; pottery and sculpture suite; painting and drawing studio; art gallery; library and reception center all housed under one roof. Sometimes classes are moved outside to the lanai, among the shady trellises draped with jade. The teachers are enthusiastic professionals who enjoy sharing their expertise and their love for the arts to students at all skill levels. Classes are conducted in a non-competitive atmosphere to encourage people of all abilities and ages to experiment. Reaching children through the arts is one of the missions of The Art School at Kapalua. For families with limited resources, the school offers scholarships to their summer enrichment camp. The school is also able to offer affordable classes to both residents and visitors largely through the generoity of its benefactors. The school was built in memory of the late Sandra Buffet, an art enthusiast who had a home in the Pineapple Hill enclave of the resort. Ceramic castings of her work are exhibited at the school. Class offerings include painting, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, photography, ballet, creative movement and "paint your own" ceramics studio. Daily, weekly and semester programs are available to residents and visitors. |
