HOTEL INFORMATION
Rum Point Inn

Welcome to the special world of Rum Point Inn! We are located 60 miles south of Belize City on the Placencia Peninsula - an area which offers the best of both water and inland adventures. Rum Point Inn, where personalized service is the rule and the unique ambiance is famous, has been run by the Bevier family since it's opening in 1974.

George and Corol Bevier came to Belize with their four children in 1971. After many years of travel and living in Latin America, they selected Belize as the perfect place to offer guests a truly unique and varied experience, encompassing many of their own personal interests, including the protection of Belize's ecology, the reef, natural history and Maya culture.

In conjunction with their interest in the Belizean environment, the Beviers have endeavored to make Rum Point as Green a hotel as possible and joined in efforts to conserve and protect the natural resources of both the peninsula and the country.

Snorkeling at Rum Point Inn, Placencia, Belize

Snorkeling is a safe, easy and enjoyable activity for all age and skill levels and is ideal for families. It is perhaps the easiest way to immerse oneself into a truly wild environment!

The morning starts off by signing in and gearing up! A mask, snorkel and fin set are available at no charge to the guests of Rum Point. The boat departs from the dock in front around 9:00 am and returns between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Our staff will be sure to take you to the best site for that day. We visit a variety of sites here in the southern part of Belize and go to some of the same sites where we take our SCUBA divers. (See map).

Once at the caye of choice for the day, a certified guide from the Rum Point Divers staff will assist you with gearing up and then guide you over some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. Your guide will point out and identify fish and coral along the way. From the majestic Queen Angelfish to the large brain corals... there will be something that captures your eye!

Exploring these waters is like having a private aquarium. Imagine being surrounded by silver sides minnows, so thick at times that the bottom is hidden and so agile that you can’t swim into them, no matter how hard you try! Darting in and out of the swarm, but gracefully missing each other, are parrot fish, blue tangs, trumpet fish, and too many others to name!

Around noon, the dive boat returns with the SCUBA Divers and a picnic lunch or BBQ is served on the caye for all to enjoy. You can then take a break and walk around the caye, grab a shade tree or palapa for a nap, or start that book you’ve always wanted to read. After lunch has settled, the guide will go for another snorkel with all who are interested and the divers make their second dive.

You then pick up all of your gear and head to Rum Point. There might be a chance that the boat will come across a pod of spotted or bottlenose dolphins who are in the playful mood. Should this be the case, the captain will attract them with the wake of the boat... for some close up sights and great photo opportunities! And at times you can join them in the water!

Once back at the Inn, we encourage our snorkelers to look at our REEF Fish Identification books to see how many species of fish they saw on their snorkel adventure! Who knows....it just might turn into a new hobby!

MAIN LODGE: The Main Lodge at Rum Point Inn has become our Guests’ favorite hangout – and for good reason! It is at once an ideal place for solitude or quiet reading, as well as the heart of our perfectly-paced social activities. You will find our friendly and helpful Front Office, where you’ll check in for all your needs, not just your room key. Our great staff can assist you with telephone services, help you arrange your daily tours, reconfirm flights and generally aid in whatever will make your trip more enjoyable. And then there’s the famous Rum Point Library. A personal passion for the owners, George and Corol Bevier, The Library has an extensive collection on Belizean Culture, Natural History and Maya Studies. There are also plenty of novels, reference works, and periodicals. There is ample lounge seating, and the Library houses the only television at Rum Point Inn (which you’ll probably never watch). Next there is the welcoming Rum Point Bar, a warm and intimate room with beautiful handcrafted local Belizean woods and a wonderful collection of ancient bottles and pipes, found by snorkelers right in front of Rum Point Inn. Of course we’ll serve up any of your favorites, and we offer an ample wine list, but we’re known for our Rum Point Rum Punch! Our Gift Shop features local crafts, beachwear, souvenirs and books. There is also a wide selection of fly fishing flies for that big catch.

Perhaps the best part of the Main Lodge is the breezy Verandah with its sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea. The lovely colonial style porch is strung with colorful family size hammocks for the ultimate in lazy relaxation. There is plenty of cushioned seating, and the breezes from the sea are cooling and invigorating. Most of our Guests gravitate to the Verandah for a good part of their day or evening!

At Rum Point you will be cosseted in a spacious exotic setting nestled in your own oasis, a sculpted dome Cabana within feet of the tranquil Caribbean or one of our air-conditioned Garden Suites. The social hub of the resort is the Main Lodge, a colonial style building dating from the 1950's. Here you will find the Library and the magnificent, hammock hung Verandah! Here also is our seaside tropical Dining Room where imaginative meals are created daily.

We share with you 10 beachfront Cabañas and 12 air-conditioned Suites with a special flair that will enhance your stay with us at Rum Point Inn. Each spacious room, with either a king or two queen beds and many with a convertible sofa, enjoys a private bath, ceiling fan, personal safe, coffee maker and refrigerator. These rooms are furnished with locally designed and made Belizean hardwood furniture, local art, and Guatemalan fabrics created especially for Rum Point Inn.

Rum Point Inn amenities for guests include the garden pool with its soothing waterfall, our relaxing room for therapeutic massage and organic facial and body treatments, bicycles, kayaks, sailing dinghy, snorkel gear, many beach chairs and shady palapas. Snorkel and dive instruction can be arranged right on the premises through our PADI dive shop, Rum Point Divers. Other services include a Gift Shop with many local crafts, a full service Bar and laundry service. USA direct telephone service, Email and Internet Access will be active by November 2002. Our extensive Library, reputedly the largest private library in Belize, includes both books and magazines and covers Maya studies, Natural History, Belizean authors and history as well as a large assortment of reference materials, current fiction, Latin American authors, a book selection for children and some board games. These can be enjoyed in the Library, or, better yet, on the hammock-hung Verandah overlooking the beach and the Caribbean Sea.

Let Rum Point Divers take you exploring the many cayes and reefs of southern Belize. AURIGA II, our Pro 42' jet boat... the premier dive boat in the area.. offers the most comfortable ride to the many dive and snorkel sites. Of great interest is the very recent establishment of the Gladden Spit/Silk Caye area as a Marine Reserve. It is here, during May, June and July, that the WHALESHARK may be observed...one of the few places in the world that it is possible to see this magnificent creature. Rum Point Inn can offer full SCUBA and snorkel training, referral and introduction to SCUBA courses.

Rum Point Inn is the first R.E.E.F. Station in Belize and can supply materials to members and offer information on how to become a member. We are also a DAN sponsor and support the Hyperbaric Chamber in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye in the northern part of Belize. Rum Point Divers is a professional operation and the safety of our guests is of paramount importance to us. Come, let Rum Point Inn be your springboard to more adventurous excursions to the nearby cayes and the spectacular reef in Southern Belize.

Many other tours are available through Rum Point Tours. These can include a visit to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world's only Jaguar Reserve; perhaps a boat trip up Monkey River to see birds, iguanas and Howler Monkeys and more; or take a journey to the Maya Ruins of Southern Belize-Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit and the Maya villages of today. Another popular activity is Fishing.

The Placencia area is considered one of the prime fishing areas of Belize and offers Flyfishing with expert guides for Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit. There is also spin casting and trolling for many species including Jack, Snapper and Baracuda.

Rum Point Inn has been owned and operated by the Bevier Family since 1974.
